5. COURSE OBJECTIVES

1. Students learn analytical techniques applied to optics, starting from the basic electromagnetic beginning. (Criterion 3(a))

2. Students learn to recognize and interpret basic mathematical expressions of wave optics, and understand and predict

simple hologram behavior. (Criterion 3(a))

3. Students learn to calculate simple diffraction patterns in the absence and presence of lenses, and will learn applications of

diffraction including optical spatial filtering. (Criterion 3(a))

4. Students learn to use ray matrix optics and conceptually relate ray optics to wave optics. (Criterion 3(a))

5. Students learn the basic concepts of polarization and how they are used. (Criterion 3(a))
