EE/ECE Alums held a meeting at the reunion Sept. 5, 2008 and officially voted in the Society's Board of Governors and ratified the draft constitution. Once the election of officers is complete, the constitution will be taken to the OSU Alumni Association Board of Directors for final approval, upon which we officially become an Alumni Society.
ALUMNI REUNION WEEKEND 2008
All department alums were invited back to Dreese Laboratories for some specially arranged events on Sept. 5, 2008. We had a good turn-out - approximately 40 people throughout the day. The numbers increased from last year and we are confident that as word spreads of our reunions, participation will continue to grow. I'd like to thank all of our alums who joined us for the days' events, University Catering for providing an excellent (and abundant) lunch, several faculty/researchers/students from the IMR Nanotech West Lab and the ElectroScience Laboratory for taking their time in giving 22 of us facility tours, and a special thank you to professor and Chair Robert Lee, for providing the resources to make this event so successful. If anyone has suggestions for next year's reunion please send them to Carol Duhigg. It's never too early to start planning!
At the reunion we held the Alumni Day John D. and Alice Nelson Kraus Memorial Student Poster Competition. There were 27 entries and all attending alums and faculty voted on their favorite poster/presentation. The voting was recently tallied and the winners were announced:
- 1st place ($500): Yijun Zhou, "Polymer-Based Carbon Nanotube Antenna," advisor John Volakis.
- 2nd place ($300): Liya Ding, "Precise Detailed Detection of Faces and Facial Features," advisor Aleix Martinez.
- 3rd place ($100): William Moulder, "A Portable Low Power Harmonic Radar System and Conformal Tag for Insect Tracking," advisor John Volakis.

THE MARLIN THURSTON MEMORIAL FUND
At the request of several ECE alumni, the Department has established the Marlin Thurston Memorial Fund to recognize the many achievements of Prof. Thurston as an educator, researcher, and leader. The goal of the Fund is to establish an endowed professorship in the department. Prof. Thurston’s former students have volunteered to lead the fundraising effort: Dr. John Swartz will chair the effort and Dr. Bami Bastani and Dr. Marv White will also serve. A website will likely be set up to help in the fund raising. If you are interested in contributing to this fund or helping with the fundraising effort, please contact Margaret Dodd.
