Prospective Graduate Students: How To Apply
For the Graduate Program
Students holding Baccalaureate and/or Masters degrees in engineering, science, or mathematics are encouraged to apply online at:
http://admissions.osu.edu/grad/index.asp
All applicants must:
-
Complete the application form online at www.gradapply.osu.edu. Note that there are no additional financial aid forms; you will be evaluated for financial aid based on the application material you submit. Please check the appropriate Financial Aid box(es) on the application form to request financial assistance.
-
Pay the application fee ($40 for domestic students and $50 for international students) online by credit card. Applicants who are unable to apply online or pay the application fee online by credit card must contact the Graduate Admissions Office at international.grad@osu.edu or domestic.grad@osu.edu.
-
We have two paths to the Ph.D. degree:
- The traditional path requires a Masters degree before you apply for the Ph.D. degree. Therefore, if you only have Bachelor's degree and desire a Ph.D. as your final degree, you should check the Master's/Doctorate box. Those who already have a Master's degree (or plan to have one before coming to OSU) should check the Doctorate only box.
- Students with a BS degree who desire a Ph.D. as the final degree can be admitted into the direct BS to Ph.D. program. However, they must have very strong credentials (see admission requirements). These applicants should still mark the Master's/Doctorate box.
-
The applicant must also submit materials to the University Graduate Admissions Office and the ECE Graduate Program.
Graduate Admissions Office:
-
One copy of official transcripts from all your undergraduate and/or graduate institution. For students who graduated from OSU, it is not necessary to send transcripts from OSU; however, you must send transcripts from any other institution you attended even if you have sent these to OSU in the past.
-
Official GRE and TOEFL scores, if required; international students who do not have a degree from a U.S. institution are required to take the TOEFL examination. The following students must submit GRE scores:
- All students seeking a University Fellowship
- International students who do not have a degree from a U.S. institution
Note that the GRE Writing scores are required for fellowship consideration, so older exams that did not have a writing component cannot be used. Also, if GRE and/or TOEFL scores are required, they must be received directly from ETS (Educational Testing Services) prior to the Graduate Studies Committee review. Self reported GRE and TOEFL scores are not accepted.
-
The materials for the Graduate Admissions Office should be sent to:
Graduate Admissions
The Ohio State University
Third Floor Lincoln Tower
1800 Cannon Drive
Columbus, OH 43210 USA
Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Program:
-
Three letters of recommendation. The letters of recommendation must be on official letterhead, signed and mailed to us directly by the recommender in a sealed envelope. Recommendation letters on plain paper are not accepted. Each letter must be attached to an official Graduate School Reference Form completed by the recommender and accessible at https://www.applyweb.com/apply/osu/pdf/gen_iref.pdf. Letters without the attached Graduate Reference Form are not accepted.
-
Statement of Purpose. This essay should be an autobiographical sketch that includes your higher education, any awards and honoraries, area of specialization (exp. Computer, Electromagnetics, Control, etc.), what spurred your interest in electrical engineering, your plans upon receiving your degree (in the case of a Master's student we would like to know if this is the ultimate goal or if there are plans to pursue a Ph.D.)
-
One copy of official transcripts from your undergraduate and/or graduate institution. For students who graduated from OSU, it is not necessary to send transcripts from OSU; however, you must send transcripts from any other institution you attended even if you have sent these to OSU in the past.
-
One copy of official GRE/TOEFL scores, if required. Note that this is a copy since the official one goes to admissions.
-
Applicants must submit a one- or two-page resume (Educational information should include the name of the institution, the dates attended and the grade point average [GPA])
-
The materials for the ECE Graduate program are sent to:
Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Program
The Ohio State University
205 Dreese Laboratory
2015 Neil Avenue
Columbus, OH 43210 USA

Applicants can apply for fellowships if they plan to start in Autumn, Spring, or Summer quarters. The applicant is only eligible if they have not received another graduate degree from OSU. The fellowship begins in the Autumn quarter, so a fellowship recipient starting in the spring or summer quarters must find another means of support for the quarters before the Autumn. The applicant should contact the Department to determine if other support is available. The deadlines for applying for the fellowship (to start in the following Autumn) are:
