Often, the hardware and/or software designed by ECEs has a human interface component. Good design principles for these interfaces are not easily described by equations, but rather have an "artistic" aspect. If this boundary between "form and function" interests you, then you may want to consider a Design Minor.
The Design Minor builds a solid understanding of the principles, processes, and applications of design in one or more of the four areas: Interior Design, Industrial Design, Visual Communication Design, and Information Visualization. The minor consists of 25 credit hours from the Department of Industrial, Interior and Visual Communication Design.
As an ECE student, you can use GECs and outside technical electives to help satisfy the Design Minor requirements. The following are examples.
Example GECs:
ART 300.02 Digital Photography
ART 350 Digital Image Manipulation I
ART 551 Digital Image Manipulation II
ART 551 New Media
ART 551 Computer Animation I
ART 552 Computer Animation II
ART 455 Holography I
ART 555 Holography II
ART EDUC 252 Introduction to the Computer in the Visual Arts
Example outside technical electives:
ISE 573 Cognitive Engineering I
ME 682 Product Design Fundamentals
Note: All students wishing to pursue the Design Minor must meet with Wayne Carlson in the Design Department and get approval of their proposed course plan. Also, outside technical electives must be approved by ECE.
