Application, Financial Aid, and ECE Scholarships

As one of America's distinguished public universities, Ohio State offers you more learning opportunities than any other single campus in the country. You can learn in a traditional classroom or lab, or on the job in an internship or co-op work experience - here in Columbus or around the world. And with over 600 student activities and organizations to choose from, and students from all 50 states and over 100 nations to interact with, you are sure to meet others with interests and aspirations similar to your own.

Financial aid is intended to help students finance their educations when family and personal resources are not adequate to meet the total educational costs. Financial aid consists of scholarships and grants (non-repayable gift assistance), loans (which must be repaid), and part-time employment. The university makes every effort within its means to help students with limited financial resources secure the needed funds.

A Message from the College of Engineering: Every year engineering students do not receive thousands of dollars in scholarships and financial aid to which they are legally entitled, simply because they fail to file applications in a timely manner. The purpose of this message is to provide information regarding application procedures and deadline dates to ensure that all engineering students are aware of this important information.

Academic-based scholarships only - The easiest way to be considered for all OSU, College of Engineering (COE) and Engineering Departmental scholarships is to complete the Buckeye Basics Application. This application is published by the Office of Student Financial Aid. Please note you will need to download and print this application as it cannot be filed electronically. File the original with the Office of Financial Aid in 517 Lincoln Tower and leave two copies in 122 Hitchcock Hall before March 1. One of the copies will be used to screen you for all COE-controlled scholarships and the second copy will be forwarded (based on your major) for departmental-controlled awards. Students with renewable OSU-sponsored scholarships (e.g. Trustee or University Scholarship) do not to file Buckeye Basics to have those scholarships renewed.

If you are only interested in engineering scholarships (either College or departmental), complete the OSU Scholarship Application and file the original along with one copy in 122 Hitchcock Hall. (There is no separate application for the ECE Department, but make sure you submit TWO copies to HI 122 so that one of them gets routed to ECE.) And again, while some departments might prefer their own application, they will all accept the OSU Scholarship Application. Deadline is March 1.

In general almost all engineering funds are awarded based on CPHR here at OSU, but there is one account, Herbert L. Johnston, where the first preference is not grades, but instead is awarded based on number of hours worked. The intent is to acknowledge students who work copious amounts of time and who have exhibited some academic potential (CPHR 2.5 - 3.0). So please use the personal statement on the application to let us know if you would like to be considered for this fund. NOTE: If you filed copies of the Buckeye Basics Application with 122 HI, you do not need to complete the College of Engineering Application to be considered for all engineering awards.

Need-based Aid
- To be considered for all need-based scholarships (e.g. Scarlet & Gray), Federal Supplemental Education Grant (SEOG), OSU Grant, Justin Morrill Grant, Federal PELL Grant, State of Ohio Instructional Grant, Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Work-Study, or Federal Direct Student Loans you must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) with the federal processors before March 1 in addition to the Buckeye Basics Application described above. It is important to file before the March 1 deadline, even if it means estimating the income information reported on your FAFSA. OSU's Office of Student Financial Aid is strongly recommending that all students file the FAFSA on-line.

Information on applying to Ohio State University and obtaining Financial Aid is available at the following WWW sites:

  • Admissions & Financial Aid: information for undergradate, graduate, transfer, professional, and international students. Application forms can be downloaded from this site.
  • Scholarships for Undergraduate Study in Electrical and Computer Engineering: The OSU Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is privileged to have several endowed funds whose annual income provides full or partial scholarships to undergraduate students in the traditional electrical engineering option or the computer engineering option given by the Department. Each of these endowed funds was established for this purpose by the generous contributions of alumni, faculty and friends of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
  • FinAid: the Financial Aid Information Page. This page provides a free, comprehensive, independent, and objective guide to student financial aid. It is maintained by Mark Kantrowitz, author of The Prentice Hall Guide to Scholarships and Fellowships for Math and Science Students, and is sponsored by the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA).
