Using the ECE Anonymous FTP Server
- Restrictions

- Quotas
Unauthorized use of the ECE FTP server is prohibited.
Users may connect to the ECE ftp server at this address:
ftp.ece.ohio-state.edu
Any "modern" ftp client with the ability to support passive connections
should work with this service.
Users should log in with a username of "anonymous" or "ftp", and it is
requested that they submit their email address as their password.
All connections and transfers are logged.
To find a download area, look in the pub directory.
To find an upload area, contact the person you are trying to give
the file to, and they will provide the necessary path.
By default, no ECE users will have an account on the ECE FTP server.
Eligible ECE users who may request accounts on the server include
faculty, staff and grad students specifically designated by a faculty as
being responsible for maintaining a specific research area's FTP site.
Ineligible ECE users: undergraduate students and graduate students who
want to make personal use of the server.
Accounts will be created only as requested. Usernames will be set to
match the user's ECE email address unless otherwise requested. Passwords
will be set to match the site default for the ECE primary systems. Users
should (and may be required to) change their password upon their first
login, using the "passwd" command.
Accounts may access the ftp server via SSH only.
Download Areas:
When an account is created, a link is created in the home directory
called pub. This link points to the directory where
users may place their files for others to find.
All files kept on the server for download should be compressed
to save as much file storage space as possible. It is recommended that
gzip, tar, and WinZip be used as the compressed/archiving utilities,
but others may be used if they better fit a given users needs.
Files must be set to world readable for the anonymous user to download
them. Directories must be world readable for the anonymous user to do an
ls within them (this is something you may at times wish to
disable), and must be world executable for the anonymous user to be able
to cd into that directory and/or to extract any files which
are contained therein.
Please note: the ftp server is not backed up. It is intended to
hold copies of files for others to access... it is not intended to
be used as an active data store.
Upload Areas:
Anonymous uploads require extra security precautions. They will not
be detailed in this open web document. If you need assisstance with
your anonymous upload area, please contact site for all relevant
details.
Quotas: There are
no disk quotas on this server. It is expected that the 30GB
of usable disk space assigned to this server can be shared by all the
faculty and that it can be self policed. If all data is compressed and is
only loaded on the server when it is being actively distributed, this
should not be a problem.
