Wireless Networking Policy
Wireless networking on the OSU campus is managed by OIT. You can find full details on this network here:
http://wireless.osu.edu/
The following local policies apply, in addition to all OSU-level policies:
- OSUWIRELESS is the primary wireless network for OSU and ECE
and as such it must take precedence over conflicting installations and
technologies.
- Non-OSUWIRELESS wireless local area networks (WLANs) are
generally banned within the ECE buildings. Exceptions may be made for
research purposes. Persons with such requirements must contact SITE
prior to any such installation.
- Person wishing to use non-WLAN, wireless technologies must
coordinate all operations with SITE prior to purchase and/or
installation. Some such technologies have been shown to interfere
with the WLAN, and their usage may be limited or restricted. The
following are known cases, but should not be taken as an exhaustive
list.
- Cordless phones in the 2.4GHz band should not be used
within the ECE buildings. 900MHz phones and 5.8GHz phones are
considered acceptable at this time, but may be restricted at a later
date.
- Bluetooth operates within the same frequency range as
OSUWIRELESS, but it is believed that its frequency hopping technologies
have little impact on the wireless network. However, there are
studies documented on the Internet that indicate problems may develop
as the bluetooth installation base grows. For this reason all
bluetooth installations must be registered with SITE. Further, if any
bluetooth installation is shown to adversely impact OSUWIRELESS,
that installation may need to be restricted or removed.
- Any and all wireless technologies are subject to all University
and Departmental networking and proper usage policies.
