Research
Partnerships
Contact the Director of the
Industrial Affiliates Program for details on establishing
a research partnership. Our experience, backed by research studies,
demonstrates that better organized and adequately supported university
programs have the greatest success in attracting new employees
and transferring technology. Characteristics of a program that
meets the broadest needs of the university include:
- strategic
orientation
- long-term
commitment
- involved
alumni
- investment
in time and resources
Development
of a strategic approach usually begins with an existing recruiting
program. The involvement of a team headed by a senior executive
(a "university champion") who is supported by representatives
from key areas such as human resources, foundation giving, and
research & development adds strength and commitment.
The next step
is to seriously consider a written agreement with the university
to document the mutual commitments and expectations. The university
should also demonstrate a parallel commitment by choosing its
own champion, a ranking official who is supported by a staff that
follows up, coordinates and communicates. Such a cooperative arrangement
can build a true sense of partnership through frequent interaction,
adequate publicity and acknowledgement of accomplishments.
The best relationships
are built on a continuing and well-organized presence at the university.
This long-term commitment includes corporate representatives who
have established relationships through various interactions over
several years. Companies successful at building such relationships:
- have representatives
serving on advisory boards
- fund particularly
relevant programs coordinate their interests across various
university organizations and disciplines
- gain exposure
through seminar programs and other innovative sponsorships
- seek and
encourage research and development activities that involve their
personnel and those at the university
