IPS Lab Information for Prospective Students
Thank you for your interest in the IPS Laboratory in the Department of Electrical Engineering at The Ohio State University. We are enthusiastic about the many opportunities for study and research offered in our graduate program.

Information for Prospective Graduate Students
- Application
- We encourage you to apply for admission to our graduate program. This is the necessary first step for us to learn about your interests and qualifications. Additionally, admission to our graduate program is required before any offer of financial aid can be considered. You can request application materials and graduate program materials by sending electronic mail to eegrad@ece.osu.edu.
Students are strongly encouraged to begin their graduate studies in the Autumn Quarter, if at all possible. Many graduate courses are taught in sequences that begin in the Autumn, and most forms financial aid are awarded on a schedule that assumes Autumn entrance.
- Curriculum
- For information on course offerings in the Communications and Signal Processing Area, please visit the Area Homepage.
- Financial Aid
- Our students are supported through four forms of financial aid: university fellowships, research assistanships, teaching assistantships, and externally sponsored fellowships. Each of these are discussed below.
- University Fellowships
- A fellowship competition is sponsored by the Graduate College and is coordinated with Autumn entrance. Each year, as many as 25 top E.E. applicants from the United States and countries around the world receive a fellowship offer of full tuition and monthly stipend. To be considered in the Fellowship competition, submit the application for admission by February 1, and check the box labeled "Fellowship" in the Financial Aid section of the application form.
- Research Assistantships
- Research assistantship (RA) offers are generally made in the February and March to students who have been admitted for the following Autumn Quarter. Faculty members review the application materials of students declaring interest in relevant subdisciplines: communications, signal processing, controls, electromagnetics, power systems, electronic materials and devices, computer engineering, etc. Approximately one third of RA offers are made to continuing students who have demonstrated interests and aptitudes matched to specific research projects.
- Teaching Assistantships
- Our department offers approximately 25 teaching assistantships annually. However, most are awarded to continuing graduate students in their second or third years of study. Furthermore, proven competence in English is required: a test of spoken English is administered by the University for new teaching assistants.
- Externally Funded Fellowships
- Several of our past and current students have been supported by fellowships sponsored by the National Science Foundation, US Air Force, Department of Defense, AT & T, and Motorola. If you are completing a Bachelor's degree program and have established a strong academic record, we encourage you to apply for these prestigious awards. For more information, follow the WWW links above or visit your College Placement and Counseling office. Note that programs have application deadlines as much as 10 months in advance of enrolling in graduate school, and some require GRE scores. Also, most of the programs noted above require US citizenship.
- IPS Laboratory
- The faculty members of the IPS Laboratory coordinate research programs and assistantship offers. We typically make approximately six financial aid offers each year to new students.
