We are happy to announce that Mr. Kyung-Young Jung, ECE graduate student working under the supervision of Professor Fernando Teixeira, is one of the winners of this year's Presidential Fellowship competition. This is the second year in a row that one of our graduate students has won this prestigious award. (11/07)
Congratulations to Professors Robert Lee and Joel Johnson on being elected IEEE Fellows. Professor Lee was cited for his “for contributions to finite element and finite difference methods in electromagnetics” and Professor Johnson was cited for his "contributions to ocean surface remote sensing using microwave systems." Every year only 0.1% of the IEEE members are elected Fellows, the highest rank within the IEEE. Currently, about 2% of the membership holds the Fellow rank. (11/07)

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) will hold its third Grand Challenge competition on November 3, 2007. The DARPA Urban Challenge features autonomous ground vehicles conducting simulated military supply missions in a mock urban area. Read more. The multi-stage selection process for teams to enter the competition required recently that a 5-minute video of the present status (as of April 15, 2007) of developments on their car be submitted. View the video. The OSU-ACT team is led by Prof. Umit Ozguner.
Professor Umit Catalyurek has earned one of NSF's Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) awards, which recognize a young researcher's dual commitment to scholarship and education. He will receive $400,000 in funding over five years for an ambitious project titled “Scalable combinatorial scientific computing.” Catalyurek will use the award to design efficient algorithms to enable increasingly large parallel computing systems to solve ever more complex scientific problems.
