Two years ago, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) established a new scholarship program. RISE Research Internships in  Science and Engineering enables undergraduates from the United States and Canada to spend the summer working on a research project with a German PhD student, who serves as a mentor both inside and outside the laboratory. They learn about Germany from the inside, make new friends and establish professional contacts, and explore the heart of Europe.

What distinguishes RISE from other scholarship programs is its unique combination of serious research and rewarding study-abroad experience. And more than that, RISE is a program that benefits both guests and hosts. As a result, the number of internship offers from German PhD students has reached a new high. Applicants for next year's issue can choose between 506 projects at universities and research institutions all over Germany.

Since most applicants hear about the program through their  professors, we would greatly appreciate if you could help spread the word about RISE on your campus. For instance, you could briefly talk about the program at the beginning of class, and you could ask your colleagues in biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, and engineering to do likewise.

Please also note that we have recently established a new sister program named RISE professional. It is aimed at seniors graduating this May (who are not eligible for RISE) as well as graduate students and PhD students. We match them with a German company, where they gain insight into the professional applications of science and engineering and develop their own practical skills.

The programs' particulars (eligibility, the application process, reports from past participants) are available at

Applications are due on January 31 (RISE) and  January 10 (RISE professional).
