ECE 311 – Electromagnetics I

Spring 2007

 

Summary:  Transmission lines, including impedance, reflections on transmission lines, Smith chart. Pulses in transmission lines. Introduction to static electric and magnetic fields, including currents, Ohm’s law, resistance, inductance, capacitance, dielectric and magnetic materials.

Textbook: 

Fawwaz T. Ulaby, Fundamentals of Applied Electromagnetics, Prentice-Hall (either 4th or 5th edition)

 

Prerequisite: ECE204 or ECE205, Math 415, and acceptance as an ECE major (or permission of instructor).

 

Outline:

 

  1. Review of complex numbers and phasors.
  2. Transmission line equation (voltages and currents).
  3. Transmission line fields.
  4. Transmission line impedance, reflection coefficient, impedance matching.
  5. The Smith Chart.
  6. Pulse propagation and transients on transmission lines.
  7. Review of vectors, vector calculus, and coordinate systems.
  8. The electric field: Electrostatics and Gauss’ law.
  9. The magnetic field: Magnetostatics and Ampere’s law*.

 

(* time permitting, otherwise it will be covered on ECE 312)

 

Grading:

 

Homework (10%), Midterm 1 (22.5%), Midterm 2 (22.5%), Computer Project (15%), Final Exam (30%)

Exam dates to be determined.

 

Homework: ~weekly. Assigned Friday and collected on the following Friday.
