Before You Start - Silvaco TCAD Software for EE637 and EE734

Electrical Engineering

Back to the introduction to Silvaco software for EE637 and EE734

Starting the Silvaco software.

Before trying to start the Silvaco TCAD software, do one of the following:

Option 1: Copy (cp) your .login file to another file (e.g. .login_old). Then edit your .login file to add the following lines:
Setenv SILVACO /apps/silvaco
setenv PATH ${PATH}:${SILVACO}/bin
setenv SFLM_SERVER eenis.eng.ohio-state.edu

(Editors available on the er4 workstations.)

If you choose option 1, the environment for Silvaco TCAD will be set the next time you log in. You will only have to do this once. You will have to log out of your current session and log back in for the changes to take effect.

Option 2: Type the following at the prompt:

source /apps/silvaco/SETUP

If you choose option 2 you will have to retype that line every time you log in, before you can use the Silvaco TCAD software.

Note: Files that begin with a period (sometimes called "dot files") are hidden files in that they are not displayed by the simple ls command. You can use ls -a for dot files to be included in the directory listing.

Warning: Errors in your .login file can disrupt your log in. Don't change things if you don't know what they do and what the impact of your change will be.

It is also recommended that you make a sub-directory (mkdir) in which to keep your Silvaco TCAD files.
