ECE alumna Xin (Carol) Liu earned her MBA from the Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, 2019; her PhD in Electrical Engineering at Ohio State in 2006 and her MS in Electrical Engineering at Ohio State in 2004. She previously earned her BS in Electrical Engineering at North China Electric Power University, in China, 2002. She specializes in Electric Power Systems and High-Voltage Engineering.

Her present position is Manager, System Performance Analysis, at American Electric Power (AEP) Transmission.

Liu is an IEEE Senior Member (2015), and is active in the IEEE Power Energy Society (PES) and Dielectric and Electrical Insulation Society (DEIS). She won the EPRI Power Delivery & Utilization Technology Transfer Award in 2014.

Her distinguished career has been with AEP Service Corporation since 2006. She had several career stages there. Initially, she spent two years at AEP’s Dolan Technology Center. Her duties were high voltage testing of power system components, failure analysis and condition assessment of insulating materials, and the development of various test procedures and guidelines. Then, she spent two years in AEP’s Distribution Group. She was the technical lead of arc flash hazard calculations, polymer materials technology review projects, and was technical advisor for several development projects. She was also involved in Renewable Energy Technology evaluations including Wind, Solar, and FuelCell technologies. Her next five years were spent in the Advanced Transmission Studies and Technologies Group (ATST). She was the technical lead, technical advisor and domain expert of several projects, related to energy efficiency, novel transmission line conductor evaluation, and steady-state and transient analysis studies for transmission systems. She was the technical lead of the award winning new 345 kV high-capacity, high-efficiency “BOLD” transmission line.

The BOLD line design was recognized internationally. The development tasks of the BOLD line included complex transmission line design studies, as well as electrical testing, and insulation coordination studies. Liu spent her next two years with Transmission Asset Performance (TAP) where she gained the regulatory and financial business aspects of AEP Transmission through managing over $3 billion of AEP Transmission's capital deployment. Since 2016, she has been the Manager of AEP’s System Performance Analysis in ATST. The tasks of her department include  dynamic modeling analysis of the transmission system as well as new technology evaluation and development.

Liu has teaching experience at Ohio State as well. She was a high-voltage area teaching and research associate during her graduate studies. She returned as a part-time instructor later, in 2013, teaching an undergraduate “Power Systems and Sustainable Energy” lecture course.
