Online communication and data systems take on many forms. Making this happen faster, more efficient and more secure keeps many an engineer up at night.

At The Ohio State University, engineering faculty member Aylin Yener made great strides within the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE) this winter. She won the 2020 IEEE Communications Society Technical Achievement Award and was previously listed as a new IEEE Featured Author

IEEE is the world's largest technical professional organization for the advancement of technology The award Yener received recognizes members of the Communication Theory Technical Committee (CTTC) of the IEEE Communications Society who achieved outstanding work in communication theory, and earned a high degree of visibility in the field.

Yener, an Electrical and Computer Engineering and Integrated Systems Engineering professor, received the honor "for contributions to physical layer security and energy harvesting communication systems."

The CTTC of the IEEE Communications Society focuses on fundamental problems associated with the transmission of information. Of special interest, is the novel use of communication theory and/or information theory to solve problems in such areas as source and channel coding, storage, modulation, detection, estimation, synchronization, multiple access, interference mitigation, and networking.

Communications through all media, such as wireless media, wireline, fiber, infrared, optical, magnetic storage, etc. are of interest in this field of research. Applications, such as wired/wireless/hybrid networks, multi-antenna communications, short-range acoustical links, long-distance space communications, voice, data, image, and multimedia transmission, and storage channels are included.
