Join us on March 4 as the Institute for Materials Research and the IIT Bombay-Ohio State Frontier Center present the next installment of 2021 OSU Materials Week. This Thursday, we will host an in-depth look at two collaborative research projects in wide bandgap semiconductors, based on β-Ga2O3 and SiC, respectively. Both of these materials systems lay the groundwork for advancing electronics for high-power applications, such as electric vehicles, data centers, solar power, and wind farms.

Attendees are also invited on a virtual tour of R&D labs at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, where some of this innovative work is conducted. Chandan Joishi, a project research scientist at IIT Bombay, will showcase several instruments integral to ongoing research and testing that are helping make advancements in fields related to wide bandgap power electronics. Joishi collaborates with Prof. Saurabh Lodha and worked closely with Ohio State Prof. Siddharth Rajan, as a Visiting Scholar through the Institute for Materials Research’s Global Partnership Grant program.

Prof. Saurabh Lodha will lead a discussion on his collaborative research on gallium oxide semiconductors. Lodha is a professor in Electrical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and a leader of the Frontier Center, which fosters collaborative research projects in materials, devices, components, and systems between IIT Bombay and Ohio State. He received the 2020 Young Career Award in Nano Science & Technology, instituted by India’s Department of Science and Technology.

Prof. Anant Agarwal will present his work in a collaborative research project focusing on silicon carbide semiconductors. Agarwal is a professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Ohio State, as well as a leader in research focusing on advancing and extending the capabilities of SiC devices. He and IIT Bombay Prof. Swaroop Ganguly were awarded funding through the Frontier Center Scholar Grant Program for their collaborative project “Towards Rugged SiC Technology for Electric Transportation.”

About Materials Week:
For more than a decade, IMR has dedicated one week in May to celebrate the innovative research and accomplishments of the materials community at The Ohio State University. This year, we’re taking a new approach to that celebration. 2021 OSU Materials Week is going virtual, with online presentations, virtual tours and a host of other interactive sessions covering a wide range of areas.

Each year, IMR solicits topics of interest from faculty to be featured throughout OSU Materials Week to ensure the range of research areas covered each year reflects the breadth of the materials community at Ohio State, while always being different.

Join us this year as we explore new frontiers in quantum information science, revolutions upending the traditional manufacturing landscape, Ohio State’s role in materializing one of “NSF’s 10 Big Ideas” with new quantum technologies, and the future of biomanufacturing and its effect on research and clinical medicine. Attendees are also invited to take a virtual tour of Indian Institute of Technology Bombay facilities available for collaborative research via Ohio State’s first offshore research center, the IIT Bombay-Ohio State Frontier Center.

IMR welcomes researchers from academia, industry and government labs, as well as students and the greater community, to come together, learn, and create connections and collaborations at this virtual event series.
