The Ohio State ECE Program
ABET-accredited program is designed around a core that establishes a strong engineering foundation, with electives that allow the flexibility to specialize in a number of technology areas that interest you most. We offer a large and diverse number of labs. The labs enable students to gain hands-on experience in topics like photonics, electrical energy conversion, high voltage engineering, integrated circuit fabrication, microcontrollers, microprocessors, signal processing and many more.
First-Year Experience program. The Fundamentals of Engineering program offers an unparalleled first-year engineering experience program. The program allows students who place at the pre-calculus or higher level of math to take engineering courses beginning their first semester. You'll also enhance your presentation and communication skills, gain experience working in teams and learn the importance of documentation in engineering.
Integrated Sophomore Experience. The Integrated Sophomore Experience seamlessly integrates lectures with engaging labs based on state-of-the-art tools and equipment. In addition, sophomores have their own dedicated space where they can meet to conduct lab experiments, watch recorded lectures and lab manual videos on a wide panel display, discuss projects or just relax with friends.
Earn a master’s degree in less time. The combined BS/MS degree allows qualified students to start on a master’s degree while completing a bachelor’s degree and enables a head start a new career.
Get hands-on experience from co-ops and internships. Although Ohio State engineering students are not required to do a co-op, many graduate with intern or co-op work experience, which has numerous benefits for students both while completing your education and after graduation. Students have access to the Engineering Career Services office which assists students in finding internships, co-ops and launching their careers.
Co-ops and internships. These opportunities provide many benefits for students, including:
• Test your choice of majors while there's still time to change, or get insight into a specialization or technical electives to pursue.
• Classroom learning is more interesting when you know how it is applied in the real world.
• Challenge technical skills and improve people skills in professional environments.
• Document your experience in your resume.
• Better life/work balance: the income you'll make as a co-op can help you focus on classes and campus activities during school quarters - you might not need a part-time job.
• Gain field-related experience for better marketability at graduation. Graduating students with co-op or internship experience report higher salary offers than students without experience. When hiring college graduates, more than 98% of employers recruit through their co-op and internship programs first.
Gain a technical foundation for careers in business, medicine, law and more. The solid foundation in high technology problem-solving provided by an electrical and computer engineering degree enables engineers to expand their careers into other fields including business (with an MBA you could manage a high technology firm), medicine (obtain an M.D. to practice medicine or conduct research in medical technologies) law (you could specialize in intellectual property law) and more.
