Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships
FLAS Fellowships are funded by federal grant money from the Department of Education. Fellowships are given to students to study critically needed languages and to develop students’ cultural understanding of foreign countries through area studies courses. Fellowships are available for either Summer 2013 or the 2013-2014 academic year. Summer fellowships are for students to study-abroad at an intensive language program or to attend a domestic summer language institute. Academic year fellowships are for students to study at OSU; students enroll in one language course and one area studies course each semester. Both undergraduate and graduate students can apply. The application deadline is February 1, 2013. Applications and more information is available on the FLAS website.
Languages in which the Slavic Center offers fellowships are: Bosnian-Serbian-Croatian, Czech, Georgian, Modern Greek, Hungarian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Turkish, Uzbek, Yiddish

East Asian Studies Center's Fellowships for Undergraduate STEM Students

These fellowships are available to undergraduate students of junior or senior standing in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) field who have successfully completed two years of East Asian language study at the college level. Summer 2013 fellowships are expected to cover $5,000 in tuition and also provide a $2,500 stipend. Academic Year 2013-2014 fellowships are expected to contribute $10,000 towards tuition and also provide a $5,000 stipend. Subject to approval, FLAS fellowships may also be used for foreign language and area studies at other U.S. or foreign institutions.
