A graduate research associate from the Electroscience Lab has received a doctoral research award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Antennas and Propagation Society Doctoral Research Award.

Zheyu Wang received the award, which includes a $2,500 fellowship. The award will be used to fund Wang’s research, “Wearable Ultra Wideband Textile Antenna on Variable EBGs for Body-Worn Omni-directional Coverage.” Wang's PhD advisor is Professor John Volakis.

“Personal wireless communication devices require reliable and uninterrupted wideband operation to deliver high data rates regardless individuals’ movements,” Wang said. “My approach aims to create a new body-worn antenna aperture that is concurrently broadband and low-profile and can be integrated into clothing.”

His research will adapt multi-disciplinary techniques including wideband antennas, electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) designs, body-worn communications, and fabrication of radio frequency functionalized composite materials.

Zheyu Wang is from Wuhan, China. He earned his bachelor’s degree from UESTC in 2009 and is currently pursuing a master’s and doctorate degrees in electrical and computer engineering at Ohio State. His primary research interests are body-worn antennas and wearable electronics, novel materials and structures for RF applications and medical sensing.

“The selection committee commends you on the high-quality proposal you prepared for your application, and we hope that the award funds will enable you to continue your electromagnetics education,” said David Kelley, co-chair of the IEEE AP-S  Education Committee.

The committee awards up to six $1,000 pre-doctoral scholarships and up to ten $2,500 PhD fellowships each year to encourage students to pursue a career in electromagnetics. The awards support students involved in research directed by a faculty member who is a, IEEE AP-S member.
