Video: Dr. Hesham El Gamal introduction

With a background in both industry and academia, professor Hesham El Gamal became the new chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at The Ohio State University, effective September 1, 2018. He succeeds professor Joel Johnson, who served as chair since 2014.

Watch as the new chair speaks candidly about why his passion for engineering started, and how that joy for technology continues.

"I am a big believer in the quality and potential of our department," El Gamal said. "I hope to further promote our culture of collaborative work, diversity and inclusion."

El Gamal is a world-renowned information theorist and inventor, with key contributions to wireless communications, game theory and machine learning. He holds 15 U.S. patents.

Encouraging faculty and students alike to find more ways to give back to society through translational research is a goal, he said.
