After earning her BS degree in 1982 from Xian Jiaotong University in China, Electrical and Computer Engineering alumna Yilu Liu earned both her MS (1985) and PhD (1989) degrees at The Ohio State University. She specializes in Electrical Engineering - Power Systems.

Today, Liu is a Governor’s Chair Professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, as well as the Deputy Director of the $40M NSF/DOE Engineering Research Center at UTK. Liu’s research focuses on smart-grid technologies in electric power production and distribution, developing new and better ways to monitor and understand the flow of electric energy through the nation’s power grid. She has led the effort to create the North American Power Grid Monitoring Network (FNET/GridEye), the only monitoring network covering all of North America.

The distinguished alumna received the 2014 and 2018 R&D 100 Award, and was an NSF Presidential Faculty Fellow and a recipient of the NSF Young Investigator Award. She has published 300 articles, one book, and several book chapters. She is an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Fellow (IEEE) for her contributions in power equipment modeling. In recognition of her many accomplishments, in 2016 Dr. Liu was elected to the National Academy of Engineering and National Academy of Inventors for her innovations in electric power grid monitoring, situational awareness, and dynamic modeling.
