HV Circuit Breaker Design, Testing, Standards & Applications

Career:

R&D Director, Sr. Expert, Dead-Tank Circuit Breakers, GE Grid Solutions

Technical Lead, GE Grid Solutions HV Laboratory, member STLNA, A2LA Accredited Lab

IEEE High-Voltage Circuit Breaker Subcommittee Chair, Sr. Member IEEE

Accomplishments:

Specializing in Power Engineering and High-Voltage Engineering, Hermosillo led and participated in the design of all dead-tank HV circuit breakers manufactured by GE Grid Solutions (formerly Alstom/Areva) rated from 38 kV to 550 kV. He has 25 years of experience in circuit-breaker design, testing and applications. Holds 10 US & European patents covering design aspects of switchgear technology. Participated in basic research to implement controlled switching solutions for network transient suppression and performance enhancement of circuit breakers. Led the industrialization of some of the first commercially-available optical instrument transformers. Designed GE’s HV Laboratory and led its ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation. Chair of IEEE HVCB Subcommittee overseeing all IEEE standards associated with circuit breakers. Currently involved in the design of SF6-free HV AC switchgear, advanced condition monitoring and dynamic ratings.

Dr. Ali Nourai

BS (Sharif-Iran, 1975)

MS (Ohio State University, 1976)

Dr. Eng. (RPI, 1978)

Specialities:

Electric Power Engineering

Career:

Senior Engineer (AEP - 1980)
Manager of the Energy Storage Program (AEP- 2006)
Executive Consultant (DNV GL - 2010)
Director of the Global Storage Segment (DNV GL - 2014)
Chairman of the Board of Directors (Energy Storage Association – 2011)

Accomplishments:

Dr. Ali Nourai is an IEEE Fellow with six US patents for his innovative ideas to improve performance of electric grids. He is the former Chairman of the Energy Storage Association (ESA). His 40 years' industry experience includes research in American Electric Power (AEP) where he launched AEP’s successful MW-scale grid battery system that was the first in the United States. He introduced the concept of the Community Energy Storage (CES) and offered many lectures on utility-scale energy storage as a guest speaker in a number of countries. Nourai joined DNV GL (KEMA) in 2010. As the director of the Global Storage Segment, he was responsible for supporting thought leadership, road mapping and outlining the strategic options in energy storage for DNV GL and its clients. Nourai retired in 2016. He has published a book: “An Etymological Dictionary of Persian, English and other Indo European Languages.”
